Before we get into the removing and cleaning of the different model brushes and rollers, there are some preparation steps you should follow.

Shark vacuum preparation steps

  • Check there is no connection to a power source
  • For indoors, place a garbage bag or something similar to work on the floor or on a flat surface
  • To avoid having contact with the dirt from the vacuum cleaner, wear gloves while you clean
  • If you suffer from allergies, we advise you to wear a face mask
  • Gather the tools you will need to take the head apart and for cleaning. Tools such as small sharp scissors, a Phillips screwdriver for the size of the screws, a soft brush or cloth.
  • Separate the floor head from the handle by pressing the release button or latch for the detachment. If you are not sure how to disconnect the head, check your Shark owner’s user manual.

Once your preparation is done, it is time to figure out how to take the bottom off a shark vacuum before you clean the brush and roller. If your Shark vacuum cleaner model has both.

Shark Rocket Vacuum

How to remove roller brush from shark rocket vacuum is simple thanks to Shark’s vacuum design. All you need to do is follow these easy steps.
  • You will first need to perform a shark rocket disassembly of the head.
  • Inspect the head and locate the release buttons on either side to release the cover.
  • On one side of the brush, you will see a tab for you to pull and slide the brush out of the machine
  • To clean the hair and dirt entangled on the brush, you have two options. You can either use the hair removal tool that Shark provides with the vacuum or a small, sharp scissor to cut away the entangled mess.
  • Look for the groove along the brush and follow it while snipping the hair and other dirt
  • Take care not to damage the bristles on the brush

Once the brush is free from dirt, the brush is now visible for you to check for any damages. If there is, you will need to find a shark rocket brush roll replacement.

Your best options for genuine parts would be from Shark themselves, or you can buy a shark rocket roller replacement on Amazon.

If there is not much wear and tear, you can reinsert the brush back into the machine the same way you removed it. Slide it in on the one side without the tab and on the side with the tab, make sure it is facing upwards for you to push it down into place.

A shark rocket also usually has a soft roller that is easy to remove by pulling up a button on the side of the cleaner. It allows the soft roller to spring out once pulled for easy cleaning. Wipe the roller with a soft brush, damp cloth or give it a proper wash with some water.

If washing it with water is your choice, be sure to leave the soft roller to dry properly before sliding it in and clipping it back into place.

Shark Navigator Vacuum Cleaner

If your Shark vacuum cleaner is a navigator lift-away series and it has suddenly shut down. It is time for you to know how to clean roller on shark navigator.
  • Separate the head from the rest of the cleaner
  • Flip it over for a clear vision of the screws
  • With your Phillip screwdriver, remove the four visible screws above the brush area and the two next to the larger wheels
  • With your Phillip flat head screwdriver, pop out the two small wheels and remove the two screws hiding under them. There are another two screws hidden in the crevices next to the two larger wheels.
  • Once the roller brush compartment is loose, flip the head over and gently separate the upper half from the lower half, not to break the wire connection
  • Carefully cut away any hair or other dirt wrapped around the brush roller with small sharp scissors
  • Once the hair is loose, pull the hair free with your fingers until the brush is clean
  • Replace the brush roller, attach the cover and replace the screws to reassemble the roller head.

Shark Rotator Vacuum Cleaner

Although the Shark Rotator is like the Navigator, such as they both have a wide cleaning head. The rotator is a little more complex in how to clean shark rotator brush roll.

To disassemble a Shark rotator vacuum cleaner, you will follow similar steps to the navigator.

The major differences to removing the roller brush from the Shark rotator are:

  • There is a hidden screw inside the hose access port. To access the screw, you will need something like a coin to turn the two plastic lock screws on either side of the hose port counterclockwise. Lift the hose port cover and you will see the screw deep inside.
  • Gently turn the unit back over to its right side up but do not separate the two parts of the vacuum yet
  • You need to be careful as there are connecting wires under the brush indicator light, disconnect the connector on the wire
  • Then you can separate the two parts
  • You will see another clear cover over the brush roll.

You will also need to remove the screws holding the clear cover, which are clearly visible before you can remove the brush roll for cleaning.

If you decide to give the brush roller a wash after removing all the hairs and other fibers, be sure to leave it to dry properly. Only once it is dry you can replace the brush roller, covers, and all the different screws.

A shark rotator brush roll replacement can easily be found if damaged on Amazon or on the sharkclean.com website under the parts and accessories tab.
